Henrik Sedin is NHL MVP
Vancouver Canucks center Henrik Sedin is the NHL MVP, ending Alex Ovechkin's bid for three straight Hart Trophy wins.
Sedin captured the top honor last night at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas, with 46 first-place votes. The Captials' Ovechkin was second with 40, followed by Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby with 20.
Ovechkin won the award for top player that is presented by the NHL Players' Association.
Hawks reportedly trade Byfuglien
The Chicago Blackhawks made a blockbuster trade with the Thrashers, the Stanley Cup champions moving Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Brent Sopel and prospect Akim Aliu to Atlanta for a first-round pick, a second-round pick, prospect Jeremy Morin and forward Marty Reasoner, a source told ESPN.com.
The first- and second-round picks that Chicago get in the deal were acquired by Atlanta in the trade that sent Ilya Kovalchuk to New Jersey in February. The deal is pending league approval. The Blackhawks have not approved the trade.
"It is what it is," Byfuglien said on ESPN 1000. "It's part of the job. You're not going to stick in one spot the whole time so I've got to go."
Heat sends Cook to Thunder
A person with knowledge of the deal says the Miami Heat traded guard Daequan Cook and the No. 18 pick in tonight's draft to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Miami acquired the No. 32 selection and cleared more than $3 million in additional salary-cap space.
The move leaves Miami with four second-round picks in the draft. Oklahoma City now has the No. 18, 21, 26 and 51 selections.
COLLEGE WORLD SERIES
Clemson beats Oklahoma
Clemson took advantage of Oklahoma's fourth-inning pitching meltdown and a costly error in the fifth to beat the Sooners, 6-4. The Tigers (45-23) move to the Bracket 2 championship game Friday against either Oklahoma (50-17) or South Carolina. Those teams play Thursday, and the winner would have to beat Clemson twice to make it to next week's best-of-three finals.
Giants in accord with Dodge, Petrus
The Giants signed punter Matt Dodge, a seventh-round pick out of East Carolina. They also reportedly have agreed to terms with Arkansas guard Mitch Petrus, a fifth-round pick. That leaves only first-round pick Jason Pierre-Paul, a defensive end from South Florida, and second-rounder Linval Joseph, a defensive tackle from East Carolina, unsigned. The Giants also received wideout Chris Davis off waivers from the Bengals.
