Heading into the season Tim Thomas seemed to be an over-the-hill (36), overpaid ($5 million this year and two more years) backup.

Oops. Thomas is by far the top goaltender in the league right now, with a 10-1 record and a 1.37 goals-against average. His revival is softening the salary-cap mess the Bruins are about to be in, when Marc Savard and Marco Sturm come off long-term injured reserve and the Bruins will need to trim nearly $4.9 million in payroll midseason.
