The Long Island Lizards selected Cornell University senior and 2007 Smithtown West graduate Rob Pannell first overall in Friday night's Major League Lacrosse draft.

Pannell earned the USILA's Lt. Raymond Enners Award last year as the Division I player of the year. He had 42 goals and 47 assists to help lead the Big Red to the NCAA quarterfinals. Pannell is a two-time winner of the Jack Turnbull Award, which is given to the most outstanding Division I attackman.

The Lizards acquired the first pick and attackman Max Quinzani from the expansion Charlotte Hounds in December for a package of players and picks.
