Mike Rivera, the Ducks' projected starting catcher, signed with the Boston Red Sox organization Thursday and will be assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.).

Rivera has spent parts of nine seasons in the major leagues, compiling a .239 average in 189 games. He appeared in one game with the Milwaukee Brewers last season.

To fill the void, the Ducks signed 29-year-old catcher Josh Johnson, who spent spring training with the Baltimore Orioles. Johnson is entering his fourth season in the Atlantic League after stints with the York Revolution (2009), Lancaster Barnstormers (2010) and Pennsylvania Road Warriors (2011).

In 107 games with the Road Warriors, Johnson batted .229 with nine home runs and 46 RBIs.
