In less than five full seasons as a professional ballplayer, reliever Jason Monti has made the rounds. Drafted by the Blue Jays in the 25th round of the 2007 draft, Monti went 9-1 over two seasons, reaching low Class A before being released in 2008. He spent 2009 with the Frontier League's Rockford (Ill.) Riverhawks before moving on to the Atlantic League's Somerset (N.J.) Patriots in 2010. Currently on the inactive list with a back injury, Monti went 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 20 games out of the bullpen.

What has been the best part about playing with the Ducks?

"The chemistry in the clubhouse is why we have done so well. There are no cliques like you find on other teams. Everybody is out to win and try to move on and get out of here, but while we are here, everybody is doing what they can to help the ballclub win."

After going 5-0 with the rookie-league Gulf Coast Blue Jays in 2007, did you feel like you were on track for the majors?

"I was hoping so. That year, I threw both sidearm and over the top. The following year [with low-A Auburn], they stopped me throwing sidearm. My ERA that year went up while I was working on my mechanics. I was hoping to be on the right pace, but things didn't work out."

Why do you think it did not work out?

"I mean, it's tough to say. There are thousands of stories out there with every guy. You never know what the real reason is. It's a numbers thing, and it is a business. But you never know the real story."

The best or most intimidating hitter you faced?

"Probably the whole Newark Bears lineup last year. They were all 10-year MLB vets, but the guy who always seemed to get me was Scott Spiezio."

What would it mean to win an Atlantic League title with the Ducks?

"It would be unbelievable. Everybody wants a professional ring. It would be a great piece to add to your collection. There are not many people who get them."
