PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Matt Harvey was supposed to face the Tigers Wednesday at Joker Marchant Stadium. Instead, he was bumped to Field No. 7 because of an MLB mandate that required the Mets to have more regulars for their trip to Lakeland.
No offense to Dillon Gee, but the national ESPN audience may have missed out on a pretty good show as Harvey appears to be polishing his act this month. Even though he pitched in a minor-league intrasquad game, Harvey looked sharp with all of his pitches, reaching 96 mph on the radar gun a handful of times.
Harvey threw 75 pitches, including 58 for strikes, and was precise with his curveball and slider. "Wherever they tell me to pick up the ball, that's where I'll go," Harvey said. "Everything felt good. I was locating everything pretty well."
He overwhelmed the competition, striking out eight. Other than a line drive that was caught, no other balls were hit in the air.
When asked if his arm strength was approaching regular-season status, Harvey indicated that he was pleased. "I'm happy with that," Harvey said. "I got a little tired toward the end, but overall, I felt pretty good."
Langill suspended
The Mets announced that Eric Langill, their bullpen catcher charged with DUI, has been suspended for seven days without pay. In a statement, the team said officials met with Langill in the morning and he was "contrite and very apologetic" about Sunday's arrest.
Extra bases
Justin Turner left the game against the Tigers in the sixth inning after he was hit on the left leg with a pitch . . . Gee allowed three hits and two runs in four innings in a 7-6 loss in 10 innings to the Tigers.
