Colleges don't bother faking it; it's all about money, period
In a strange way I actually admire the college and conference administrators who are in the process of radically reinventing the sports landscape.
Often in pro and college sports, critics accuse those in charge of disingenuously paying lip service to things like tradition and fans when in fact all that matters is money.
In this case, no one is bothering with any pretense of tradition or logical geography or the best interests of student-athletes or fans or the community.
It's about money. Period.
