Emmy discovers football

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but . . . as far as I can tell, Kyle Chandler of "Friday Night Lights" Sunday became the first person to win a lead actor or actress Emmy for a dramatic series with a sports theme.

Craig T. Nelson won in the comedy division in 1992 for "Coach," which centered on the head coach of a college football team in Minnesota.

Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton both won for "Everybody Loves Raymond," but I refuse to count that even though it was an excellent series and it focused on a Newsday sports columnist who wrote in his basement, just like a certain someone I know very well.

But after the the first season, Romano's character hardly ever was shown working, unlike a certain someone I know very well.

Ted Danson won for his portrayal of former Red Sox pitcher Sam Malone on "Cheers," but even though that show featured sports-related cameos, it was not about sports.

(Speaking of the Emmys, congrats to Jane Lynch, Cornell MFA '84, for landing the hosting gig. Alas, she didn't win an Emmy this year. Nor did Edie Falco, Northport High Class of '81. You can't win them all.)
