Eyeballs on the Tiger
ESPN's late-afternoon coverage of the first round of the Masters Thursday attracted the largest golf audience in cable TV history - an average of 4.936 million viewers.
That surpassed the average of 4.762 million that watched on ESPN when Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in a playoff for the 2008 U.S. Open championship.
The viewership average was 47 percent higher than last year's first round and 102 percent higher than in 2008.
The quarter hour during which ESPN showed Woods' first tee shot live Thursday averaged 1.1 percent of homes in major markets, up 267 percent from the same time period last year.
"Masters Live" on CBSSports.com attracted 556,090 unique visitors, up 133 percent from last year.
