Gallo was an old-school artist

Bill Gallo, son and father of newspapermen, was a figure so monumental at the Daily News that his death at age 88 warranted front and back page coverage in Wednesday’s editions.

Not bad for a guy who drew cartoons for a living. But that was part of the point.

What Gallo did as the News’ drawer-in-chief was an art that does not fully translate onto an electronic screen. The ink was part of the magic, and it helped form the texture of New York sports journalism for a half-century.
