Sports events consumed 60,000 programming hours on United States television in 2012 – up a mind-numbing 45 percent from the previous year – according to Nielsen’s annual Year in Sports Report.
In fairness, a chunk of that increase was related to the Summer Olympics. Also in fairness, there is way too much sports on TV!
Other highlights from the report:
Among mothers, Michael Phelps had the highest N-Score, which measures endorsement potential. He did not crack the top five among fathers, who went with Peyton Manning, followed by Danica Patrick and Derek Jeter.
The best-selling national sports biography, by far, was Tim Tebow’s “Through My Eyes,’’ which actually came out in 2011. Distant second: R.A. Dickey’s “Wherever I Wind Up.’’
Sports programs were the subject of 41 percent of all TV-related tweets, even though sports account for only 1.3 percent of all television programming.
