Saul Rogovin was one of best Jewish pitchers from Brooklyn
Nice work here by Baumbach tracking down the Ted Kazanski, who until Wednesday was the most recent major leaguer to hit an inside-the-park homer and start a triple play in the same game.
A secondary character in the story is Saul Rogovin, a teammate of Kazanski and one of the best Jewish pitchers ever to come out of Brooklyn - although somewhat behind Sandy Koufax on that list.
In the late 1980s I did a story about Rogovin when he was teaching at Eastern District High in Brooklyn and mentoring a star pitcher at the school named Frankie Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was drafted in the second round by the Red Sox in 1990 and spent parts of seven seasons in the majors.
I can twist pretty much any sports story into a tangential, personal remembrance of some kind. It's a gift.
