Drugs in MMA: This week's news roundup

Lots of drug-related news floating around mixed martial arts this week, most of which focuses on the success (for lack of a better word) in catching fighters running afowl of the sport's guidelines. Let's dig in.

At Tuesday's UFC 146 press conference in Las Vegas, the Nevada State Athletic Commission decided to spring surprise drug tests on the six fighters in attendance. Those six heavyweights were Junior Dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Roy Nelson and Antonio Silva. Here's more on that story.
It was one heck of a Tuesday for "King" Mo Lawal (pictured above). First, he was suspended for nine months for a positive steroid test after his Jan. 7 win over Lorenz Larkin and fined $39,000 ($15,000 win bonus and 30 percent of his $80,000 show purse). A short time later, after a Twitter rant or two, Lawal was released from the Zuffa-owned Strikeforce.
