Georges St-Pierre, the UFC welterweight champion, will miss his scheduled title defense against Nick Diaz on Super Bowl weekend because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
UFC president Dana White announced the news on his verified Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon.
St-Pierre figured to be out for at least 10 months. Diaz, GSP's scheduled opponent in UFC 143 in Las Vegas, will now fight Carlos Condit for the interim welterweight title, White said.
Diaz and St-Pierre were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 139 last month, but Diaz was pulled from the card in July after missing two press conferences to hype the card. Condit replaced Diaz in the title fight, but it never went off because the champion suffered a minor knee injury beforehand and pulled out of the fight. Diaz vs. BJ Penn became the main event for UFC 139.
And the dance continues. . . .
After Diaz picked apart Penn for the unanimous decision, Diaz was given the next title shot that night, pushing Condit aside.
Condit then agreed to fight Josh Koscheck at UFC 143 in the co-main event. Now, we've got Diaz vs. Condit, St-Pierre on the shelf and Koscheck without a fight for right now.
