Matt Serra and the best juxtaposition in MMA
There he was, Matt Serra. The only man in the world to knock out Georges St-Pierre. The man whose entrance music is "Gonna Fly Now," the theme from "Rocky." The man who is instant energy when he walks in a room.
Yet, there he was, during a late-night training session at Ray Longo MMA in Garden City, working out to the sounds of a live, acoustic guitar.
Seriously.
Quite possibly the greatest juxtaposition in mixed martial arts, or at least an amusing and paradoxical visual.
Serra, training for his welterweight fight against Chris Lytle at UFC 119 on Sept. 25, had finished up a grueling outdoor workout then moved inside for pushups and situps. He did 100 of each with workout partner Chris Weidman, who fights for the middleweight title at Ring of Combat in New Jersey on Sept. 24.
Throughout the workout, Johnny Bonilla-Bowman, an All-American wrestler who works out at Longo's gym, sat on a bench and strummed along on his guitar and sang. By the end of his jam session, he was known as the "All-American Idol."
Not exactly the hardcore, fist-pumping, blood-flowing music you might expect from an ultimate fighter, huh?
