MMA analysis: Rick DiPietro's 'fight'
In a long-standing tradition here in Fightin' Words, begun by the originator of this blog Joey Jitsu, it's time to do a little MMA analysis of good fights in other places.
This time around, it's the Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro against Pittsburgh goalie Brent Johnson, a pair of smaller light heavyweights who could easily drop to middleweight if they were to get in the cage.
This fight, embedded below, lasted all of one punch. Seriously. Not much analysis needed. Johnson came in with an overhand left that dropped DiPietro like he was Chuck Liddell against Rashad Evans or Maurico Rua or Rich Franklin. DiPietro crumbled to the ice and the referee stepped in to stop the fight because DiPietro could not "intelligently defend" himself.
If Johnson is going to make it in MMA, however, he'll need to be more aggressive in his ground-and-pound to finish fights.
The most important question is this: If you're a goalie, why do you take your mask off to fight?
