Hofstra completes best finish on mat
Charles Griffin (Reading, Pa.) and Chris Weidman (Baldwin) each placed third, James Strouse (Levittown) placed fourth and Mike Patrovich (Islip) placed sixth to lead Hofstra to its best-ever seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich. Griffin, a junior, was 35-6 at 141 pounds for the season while Weidman, a senior finished 33-8 at 197, Strouse, a senior, went 41-5 at 157 and Patrovich, a senior, was 20-7 at 165. The Pride, in their first year under coach Tom Shifflet, brought seven wrestlers to the national championships and posted a 22-13 record at the Championships to finish with 60.5 points. Weidman and Patrovich each earned their second All-America honors while Griffin earned the first of two All-America awards. It was Strouse's first All-America honor. The Pride defeated No. 1 Minnesota in the second week of the season and finished 18-4-2 in dual matches, wrestling 11 nationally-ranked opponents.
