Genoa and Sampdoria fans clash violently ahead of an Italian Cup derby
GENOA, Italy — Genoa and Sampdoria fans clashed violently on a city bridge and outside the stadium ahead of an Italian Cup derby Wednesday.
Police in riot gear were also targeted as fans threw fireworks, bottles and other objects at each other.
The teams were meeting in a second-round match later. The winner will face Roma.
Since Genoa is in Serie A and Sampdoria is in Serie B, this will be the only meeting this season between the two city clubs that share the Luigi Ferraris stadium.
