NY Cosmos propose $400 million soccer stadium in Belmont

The New York Cosmos, one of the country's most recognized soccer franchises, has proposed construction of a $400-million privately funded stadium at Belmont Park in Elmont, according to an area state senator.

The plan, submitted Friday in response to a State Economic Development request for proposal, also includes a hotel, restaurants, retail stores and a public park, according to Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola).

"This is a game changer for Nassau County and for the area as a whole," Martins said.

Martins, whose district includes Elmont, said the project could recoup some of the revenue that will be lost in 2015 when the New York Islanders depart the Nassau Coliseum for Brooklyn.

"The Belmont redevelopment proposal is an exciting prospect that will create jobs and complement Nassau's sports entertainment tourism plan," said Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano.

During the 1970s, the Cosmos were one of the county's most prestigious soccer franchises, boasting well known players, such as Pele. The franchise folded in 1984 but was revived last year. The Cosmos will begin playing in the North American Soccer League later this year with home games at the Hofstra University James M. Shuart Stadium.
