Theo Walcott cut as England announces World Cup squad

England, which if you haven't heard, is playing the United States June 12 in South Africa, has made final cuts for its 23-man World Cup roster.

The notable exclusion is speedy winger Theo Walcott, who was a surprise selection four years ago by head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson. Back then, Walcott, 17, took the spot of a veteran player despite having yet to play an English Premier League game for Arsenal.

This time around, veterans Shaun Wright-Phillips and Joe Cole got the nod ahead of him. Injured midfielder Gareth Barry, who's recovering from an ankle injury and could miss the opener against the U.S., was also included.

Defenders: Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham), Jamie Carragher (Liverpool), Ledley King (Tottenham), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa).

Midfielders: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), James Milner (Aston Villa), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Gareth Barry (Manchester City).
