MADRID — A goal in each half from Santi Comesaña set Villarreal on its way to a 3-1 win at Real Sociedad in the Spanish league on Friday.

Sociedad had two-thirds of the possession and three-quarters of the shots on goal and it still failed to worry a team that started the day seven places behind it in La Liga.

Sociedad remained in sixth spot but it has won just once in its last eight matches. Villarreal rose one place to 12th.

Comesaña put Villarreal 1-0 up from a corner in the 17th minute and grabbed a second a minute into the second half when he converted a cross from Alex Baena.

Mikel Merino got a goal back for Sociedad with four minutes remaining but its push for an equalizer opened up spaces at the back and Alexander Sørloth took advantage to add a third for the visitors deep in stoppage time.

“I am very happy with the brace, my first,” Comesaña said. “But most all for the victory, we deserved it and we needed it. We knew it was a very difficult place to play, but we are on a good run.”
