Georgetown rallies past Syracuse
Austin Freeman had 14 points to lead four Georgetown players in double figures, and the 11th-ranked Hoyas rallied late to beat No. 12 Syracuse, 64-56, Wednesday night. Georgetown (19-5, 8-4 Big East) extended its winning streak to seven and gave coach John Thompson III his first win in the Carrier Dome in six tries. Syracuse (20-5, 7-5) failed to make a basket in the final 6:36.
Georgetown tied it at 55 on a three-pointer from the right wing by Hollis Thompson with 3:47 left. Freeman followed with a fast-break layup after a turnover. Jason Clark sneaked inside twice in a row for layups to give Georgetown a 61-55 lead with 2:05 left.
Pens lose Malkin to knee surgery
Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin will have surgery to repair torn knee ligaments and will be out for six months. Malkin, the 2009 NHL scoring champion and Conn Smythe Trophy winner as MVP of the playoffs, will have surgery today to repair a torn ACL and torn MCL in his right knee. General manager Ray Shero said Malkin's rehabilitation period will take six months, and he will be ready for the start of training camp in September. Malkin was injured in Friday's game against Buffalo. He had 15 goals and 37 points this season.
Devs' Volchenkov banned 3 games
Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov has been suspended for three games by the NHL for elbowing Carolina's Zach Boychuk in the head . . . Penguins forward Matt Cooke was suspended for four games for hitting Blue Jackets defenseman Fedor Tyutin from behind.

Vonn struggles with concussion
Lindsey Vonn is still struggling to recover from a concussion, and the reigning overall World Cup champion likely will skip her next event at the world championships at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, or possibly withdraw. The super-combined tomorrow is probably off her schedule. She suffered the concussion while training last week.
