SOCCERHenry joining Red Bulls
French forward Thierry Henry is joining the New York Red Bulls. The 32-year-old former Arsenal and Barcelona player signed a multiyear contract Wednesday and he is expected to make his Red Bulls' debut on July 22 in an exhibition against Premier League club Tottenham. "Some people might think I am going to go [to New York] for vacation - I do actually go there for vacation - but it won't be for vacation this time," Henry said in a video interview on the club website.
Henry was released by Barcelona last month after scoring just four goals last season. Henry will be introduced at a news conference Thursday at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. Henry guided Arsenal to the Premier League title in 2002 and 2004 before leaving in 2007 to join Barcelona, where he won six trophies in 2009 - the Champions League, the Spanish league, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Supercup, the UEFA Supercup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Maradona continuing?
The Argentine Football Association says it will offer Maradona a four-year contract that would keep him in charge of the national team through the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. This is the strongest indication that Maradona is likely to continue as the coach. It comes two weeks after Argentina was knocked out of the World Cup in a humiliating 4-0 quarterfinals loss to Germany. Maradona has said little since then.
CYCLINGLance's teammate wins
Something finally went right for Lance Armstrong's squad at the Tour de France. Team RadioShack got its first taste of success at this year's Tour when Sergio Paulinho of Portugal captured the 10th stage. Andy Schleck of Luxembourg retained the yellow jersey with Alberto Contador 41 seconds behind. Schleck finished in the main pack more than 14 minutes back, alongside his biggest rivals for the title. Armstrong fell out of contention in the first Alpine stage on Sunday after getting tangled up in three crashes and losing minutes against the top contenders. The team is now banking on the podium hopes of Levi Leipheimer, who is sixth overall. Leipheimer is 3:59 behind.
Lance will cooperate
Lance Armstrong said he will cooperate with a "fair investigation" but not a "witch hunt" into allegations that he and his former cycling team were involved in doping. Armstrong was responding to reports of a federal investigation of possible fraud and doping charges against him and former associates.
HORSE RACING
New drug testing
The New York Racing Association will expand its drug testing program to include random out-of-competition testing when the Saratoga meet begins July 23. The new program also will include an "in-today" process designed to allow the NYRA to monitor horses the day prior to and in the hours leading up to a race. The NYRA said there will be "robust mandatory penalties" for trainers whose horses test positive for illegal drugs.
