Sean Avery reported to the AHL's Connecticut Whale Tuesday but did not skate because he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed injury. Avery, who was waived by the Rangers on Oct. 4 and cleared, had been a healthy scratch for the previous two games, in Slovakia and Switzerland. Avery, 31, last played in the AHL (eight games) in 2008-09, after he was acquired from the Dallas Stars. The Whale plays Friday in Albany and hosts Bridgeport, the Islanders' affiliate, on Saturday.

The U.S. women's team won the world gymnastics championships in Tokyo. The team of Gabrielle Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Alicia Sacramone, Sabrina Vega and Jordyn Wieber scored 179.411 points, beating defending champion Russia by four points.

The Americans won despite competing without team leader Sacramone, who suffered a torn Achilles last Thursday. She nevertheless won her 10th medal, setting an American record. -- AP
