Caroline Wozniacki pushes into semifinals
Unseeded Dominika Cibulkova made No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki work for her, 6-2, 7-5, quarterfinals victory tonight at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The five games Wozniacki lost in the second was the most anyone had taken off her in any set through five matches, and the seven total games lost tied the number Maria Sharapova won her fourth round loss to Wozniacki.
In fact, Cibulkova wasn't that far from forcing a tiebreaker, but Wozniacki broke her in the 11th game to take a 6-5 lead and, after going to deuce in the final game, the top seed polished off the match. Wozniacki advances to face Vera Zvonareva in the semifinals. Early in the second set, Wozniacki had a dispute in the chair, and the Dane showed a flash of temper that hinted at the competitive fire behind her smile.
Conditions are as tough as at any time today because of a strong wind. The American flag at the top of Ashe Stadium is starched by a wind out of the north and looks as though it's on the stern of an ocean liner headed into the wind. We'll be back shortly with quotes from Wozniacki's press conference after it takes place.
