Fernando Verdasco, David Ferrer through to 4th round
The summer of Spain continues for men's sports... First the World Cup, now it's the likelihood of at least five Spanish men into the round of 16 here.
No. 8 seed Fernando Verdasco dispatched David Nalbandian, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, just now on the grandstand. Verdasco was a quarterfinalist here last year and is part of the new wave of Spanish players who prefers the faster surfaces to the clay of Western Europe.
His countryman Ferrer, the No. 10 seed, knocked out another Spaniard, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2, earlier today on Court 11.
Ferrer was a surprise semifinalist here in 2007.
Next up on the grandstand is No. 23 seed Feliciano Lopez, who faces Sergiy Stakhovsky. After that comes one of the elder statesmen of this ground of talented Spaniards, 28-year-old Tommy Robredo, who will face Michael Llodra.
