Jelena Jankovic became the highest seed to lose in Flushing Meadows. And after her 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) loss to Kaia Kanepi, Jankovic, the No. 4 seed, blamed the windy conditions for her struggles.
“I had a hard time serving,” said Jankovic, 25, who had 41 unforced errors and 13 winners. “You toss the ball, and it was all over the place. And then you hit the ball one direction, it goes another. You’re just getting ready to hit the ball and it just moves away from you.”
According to the National Weather Service, the wind is measuring at 21 mph today with gusts up to 21 mph.
Jankovic was far from the only player struggling with the wind. Beatrice Capra, who lost 6-0, 6-0, to Maria Sharapova, had her visor blown off her head early in teh match. Lets had to be called a number of times, because winds had blown naptkins and wrappers across the court.
"This is probably the toughest conditions we're going to get," Sharapova said. "But I think last year, it was a similar situation. Third round, quite windy. I had a young opponent who came out and played great tennis. Today, I wanted to make sure I came out, concentrated and was consistent."
