No. 16 Baghdatis upset by Clement
No. 16 seed Marcos Baghdatis is gone, losing to Arnaud Clement in five sets, 6-3, 2-6, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 in a first-round match at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
On a day when No. 5 seed Jelena Jankovic survived on the women's side, Baghdatis is the first upset of the tournament.
The Baghdatis-Clement match lasted nearly three hours.
Baghdatis was the runner-up at the 2006 Australian Open and made it to the semifinals of that year's Wimbledon.
In this year's majors, Baghdatis lost in the third round of the Australian Open and French Open. He was ousted in the first round of Wimbledon.
He has never made it past the second round in four appearances at the U.S. Open.
Clement is making his 12th appearance in the U.S. Open. His best finish was in 2000 when he lost in the quarterfinals.
