Mardy Fish, the No. 19 seed from the U.S., avoided being the second men's upset of the day. Fish rallied to beat Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic on the Grandstand court.
Fish won the first set 6-0, but dropped the next two sets 3-6, 4-6 to put himself in a hole. But he rallied to win the last two sets 6-0, 6-1.
Fish, who could be a contender over the next two weeks, moves on to the second round.
