Rafael Nadal wins U.S. Open title
Top-seeded Rafael Nadal won the U.S. Open title tonight by defeating third-seeded Novak Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Nadal, just 24 years old, wins his first U.S. Open title. He also claims the career Grand Slam. It's also his ninth career Grand Slam title. Nadal becomes the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open in the same year.
It's truly a remarkable achievement for one player to win a major on all three playing surfaces in the same year.
It wasn't that long ago that Nadal missed the U.S. Open and was having knee trouble. Some questioned how long he would be able to continue in the sport with the physical beating his body was taking.
Tonight proved Nadal is clearly on top of his game and on top of the sport. He'll end the year as the top-ranked player in the world.
