The men's No. 5 seed took a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 decision over No. 21 Albert Montanes, moving Soderling into a potential quarterfinal matchup with his longtime Grand Slam nemesis, Roger Federer.

Federer's match with No. 13 Jurgen Melzer will be later tonight.

Soderling, who needed a fifth set to squeeze past a qualifier in his opening match here last week, has been very efficient since, and he was again today, even after dropping the opening set.

Soderling was a quarterfinalist here a year ago, and Federer took him out in straight sets -- the two have met 13 times, five in Grand Slams, including the last four; Soderling has only beaten Federer once in those 13 meetings, but it was this past June in Paris, a four-set win in the French Open in the quarterfinals.

A very different surface, of course, and a very different setting.
