Wozniacki, Russians

gain at New Haven

Three Russian women played their way into the Pilot Pen semifinals in New Haven and top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki advanced Thursday without ever taking the court. Wozniacki's opponent in the quarterfinals, Italy's Flavia Pennetta, withdrew with an injury to her right foot. The Danish star will play Elena Dementieva Friday. The fourth-seeded Russian needed almost three hours to beat Marion Bartoli of France, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. In an all-Russian quarterfinal, Maria Kirilenko beat Dinara Safina, 6-3, 6-3. She will play Nadia Petrova, who advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Australian Samantha Stosur. By moving into the semifinals, Wozniacki clinched this summer's U.S. Open Series and is eligible to win an extra $1 million should she win next week's U.S. Open, in which she is the top seed.

USC stripped of award

Southern California has been stripped of the 2004 Grantland Rice Trophy, awarded by the Football Writers Association of America to the nation's top college football team. The organization said a committee of current and former officers voted to revoke the honor after USC was penalized for NCAA violations. In June, USC received a two-year bowl ban, four years' probation, loss of scholarships and forfeits of an entire year's games as punishment for improper benefits to Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush dating to the Trojans' 2004 national championship. - AP
