Upsets continue: No. 6 Davydenko and No. 11 Cilic out
Nikolay Davydenko became the highest ranked player to lose in the 2010 US Open.
Davydenko was downed in straight sets by Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
The match was close despite the look of the score. Everything came down to break points. Gasquet won 4 of 7 break points, whereas Davydenko could not muster a break point in eight tries.
Davydenko, a US Open semifinal loser to Roger Federer in 2006 and 2007, last made such an early exit at Flushing Meadows in 2005.
Gasquet will next face the winner of a later match between South Africa's Kevin Anderson and Brazilian 26th seed Thomasz Bellucci.
Meanwhile, qualifier Kei Nishikori of Japan has upset 11th-seeded Marin Cilic in a five-set marathon that took a minute short of five hours.
Nishikori won Thursday's second-round match 5-7, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Two years ago, he reached the fourth round to become the first Japanese man to get that far at the U.S. Open since 1937.
Cilic made the quarterfinals last year, but weakened as this match progressed while Nishikori overcame cramps in his hands and arms to pull out the victory.
