Flights were delayed Wednesday at JFK Airport again, but this time it wasn't because of weather or suspected terrorism or an unattended suspicious briefcase. This time it was a turtle procession.

JetBlue was the first airline to clue in the public when it tweeted at about 10 a.m. that "JFK is experiencing delays as the airport clears turtles off the runway. #cantmakethisup(Check flight status at jetblue.com.)"

Flights delays ranged from 15 minutes to an hour. Since then, the turtles even launched their own twitter page, tweeting "Sorry for the delays. Late night celebrating the Mets two grand salamis" and a bunch of other hilarious excuses, including "We had a traumatic day, okay? We could use the complimentary cocktails and extra leg room." They got more than 5,000 followers in less than 24 hours.

The terrapins, who live in the bay and like to sun themselves on the nearby beach, all at once decided to cross the tarmac, presumably to lay eggs on the beach across the runway, the Port Authority told MSNBC yesterday.

Personally, I think they were enroute to the concession stand.
