Built in 1926 on a large parcel of land once owned by the so-called “Little King of Suffolk County,” this quaint Islip home, listed for $299,000, is bursting with character and old-fashioned charm. It is a few blocks from the former home of William Kingsland Macy, who earned the “King” nickname after a long and storied political career.
This two-bedroom, one-bathroom Colonial, featured on the 2012 Historical Society of Islip’s Holiday House Tour, retains many of its original 1920s features. The doors, bathtub, living room fireplace, wainscoting, hardwood floors and rope-pulley windows have all been preserved.
And updates have been carefully chosen. In the kitchen, updates were made to the paned-glass cabinet doors, and a farmhouse sink was installed to replicate the home’s original sink. “We really wanted to preserve as much as we could,” seller Suzanne Reese said.
“My husband did it all. He did a lot of research to make sure we honored the past.”
There is a walk-in pantry, formal dining room, detached garage and restored front porch.
But it’s really the home’s traditional touches that set it apart. “It’s the little pieces that you can’t really find in new homes. It’s not the same and usually not as sturdy when you try to replicate them,” Reese said.
