What LI authors are reading this summer

Summer is a great time to catch up on the year's best books, as well as old ones you may have missed in years past. We asked some of our favorite Long Island authors to share their own reading lists.

HE SAYS "It's a tribal history of the Comanches. One of the things I really like about it is he doesn't present any of the cliches we might be familiar with."

WHAT HE'S READING Peter Matthiessen's "Shadow Country," "The Plot Against America" by Philip Roth, stories by P.G. Wodehouse

HE SAYS "I'm not a big beach-read person; the better the book is, the more you forget you are on the beach. Maybe the intention is to bring lousy books to the beach so you never forget where you are."

LATEST BOOK "Anthropology of an American Girl" (Spiegel & Grau, $26)

WHAT SHE'S READING "The French Lieutenant's Woman," by John Fowles, and several plays, including Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest."

SHE SAYS "I would love to write a few plays, so I'm attracted to the form. They're dialogue-driven, so I find it to be a good way to retrain my ear to dialogue, and just rediscover the possibilities of dialogue."
