Cinema Arts' Sky Room gets an extreme green makeover

The Sky isn't blue at the Cinema Arts Centre, it's green.

Organically grown vegetarian snacks; biodegradable beverage containers, cups and plates; and utensils made from corn husks are now the star attractions at the Huntington theater's remodeled Sky Room cafe, which was unveiled last week. Munchies and drinks on the new menu include quiche, pizzas, hummus, veggie spreads, burritos, wraps, soups, salads, desserts and smoothies. And, of course, popcorn - popped with grapeseed oil (even better drizzled with organic butter).

The enlarged snack bar was also restructured with the environment in mind - the counter is made of bamboo - and low-wattage fluorescent lighting was installed in the ceiling.

In keeping with the green theme, the Sky Room's new look also includes entry to the outdoor patio, which has been given a mini-makeover - additional seating and tables and improved lighting - and will be used for more outdoor events including concerts.

One person who would have been especially pleased with Cinema Arts' eco-friendly remake is its founder Vic Skolnick, who died June 10.

"Vic said we don't poison the mind, we don't poison the body," said co-founder Charlotte Sky last week. "Now we don't poison the earth."
