It’s only the second full week of school, and it is not too late to get your year off to a great start. It might be too late to join a fall sport, but there are so many other clubs and things to consider to make this year a great one for you.

I asked 59 kids in my school what goals they set for themselves. I gave them three general topics, and here are the results:

Get better/good grades: 32

Get better at sports or do sports: 16

To have good friends or make new friends: 11

As you can see, the top choice for so many kids is to do better in school academically. Many of the kids I surveyed were eighth-graders, so they are concerned about getting into the right classes when they reach high school. Other kids wanted to make sure that they became a bit more athletic by joining teams or playing a school sport.

Finally, friendships. In our school, everyone is pretty friendly with one another, but everyone could always use another friend!
