Find Long Island-inspired gifts, décor at Drifts East in Montauk 

Though she doesn’t have a degree in art, Erica Remkus has a keen eye and natural talent that she puts to use in designing and making lots of the merchandise in Drifts East in Montauk.

Before opening in May, Remkus had an online shop, but has since added more gift items to her retail space. A former hair stylist, she designs most of the shop’s apparel, pillows, ceramic Christmas ornaments, greeting cards, handbags, blankets, dishtowels, hand towels and tumblers. The shop also features products such as soaps and books from local shops.

Many of the items have local messages and designs, with Montauk, Sag Harbor (where Remkus was raised) or Long Island inscriptions. “A lot of what I choose is nautical, seagulls and beachy,” she says.

There are children’s books and toys, as well as books for adults, ranging from fun gifts to inspirational works.

With a focus on local artisans and makers, Drifts East sells soaps from Southampton Soap Co., body care from Whipped Skincare from Westhampton and Hamptons Handpoured home fragrances and candles from East Hampton.

The shop also carries journals and notebooks, doormats, desk items, cutting and charcuterie boards, coasters, glassware and pottery, and decorative items, such as baskets, mirrors and coastal lamps and candlestick holders designed with cairn rocks.

Remkus can also custom-make items, like personalized pillows with someone’s name or the name of their boat. “Anything I can print, I can do custom,” she says.

Prices start at $1.50 for a piece of candy to up to $250 for a mirror.
