The Leaky Lifeboat celebrates its birthday

Although it may seem as if this super-successful spot had just arrived on the scene, The Leaky Lifeboat in Seaford is already celebrating a year in business.

Heralded last year by an overflowing crowd of patrons, this hipster bar's entrance helped mark the beginning of Long Island’s burgeoning alt-bat scene. Named after a song by the band Sonic Youth, ‘Leaky has a laid-back, rock-and-roll attitude that works quite successfully – noted by the large, busy nights that have kept coming back – even a year later.

Featuring such unique highlights as a monthly art show by local talent, a bicycle rack in front – not to mention the creation of a late-night vegetarian restaurant next door (L.I.V.E.: Long Island Vegetarian Eatery) – the venue’s offbeat personality will also be evident for its “1st Birthday Party,” going down on Saturday, Feb. 25 starting at 8 p.m. The theme is a “White Party” – meaning guests are asked to wear all-white clothing (not a color frequently worn by Leaky clientele). Patrons will be privy to get their faces painted while the house is bathed in black lights – leading the combination of white clothes and decorated heads to create a likely ethereal, rave-like setting.

Pabst Blue Ribbon cans (PBR is a hipster standard) and well drinks will be free from 8 -9 p.m., while everybody wearing all white will get a chance to do a free shot at 2:25 a.m. (as in “2/25,” the house birth date). DJs Dark Night, Dom P, Emissary and others will provide an eclectic mix of clever music – and, as usual, there’s no cover charge.
