Fresko Mediterranean Grill opens in Franklin Square

When Tom Daliapes grew weary of running a diner that required a commute to the city, he decided to close up his New York location and open a restaurant on Long Island.
The result is Fresko Mediterranean Grill in Franklin Square, a hybrid Greek restaurant and pizzeria that he opened a couple weeks ago, where he serves Greek dishes and Neapolitan-style pies made in a wood-fired, brick oven.
But wait, there’s more: The restaurant also sells burgers sourced from Pat LaFrieda with a menu of eight variations, each on an 8-ounce burger, such as the Chicago, with Cheddar, mushrooms, onions and bacon. (Burgers run $6.50 to $9.)
If you’re overwhelmed by choice, Greek dishes are the highlight, such as standbys like pastichio, moussaka, and spanakopita served with lemon potatoes ($12.25 each).
For a few authentic meats, there’s loukaniko, Greek pork sausage seasoned with orange peel and fennel seeds, along with the Cyprian seftalia, kind of like Serbian cevapi, a caseless sausage. In addition to gyros, there’s a Turkish doner, too. (Meat dishes and sandwiches cost $6.95 to $8 for a sandwich and up to $18 for a platter.)
Greek dishes outsell pizzas, though you can get a margherita, a Buffalo chicken pizza or a grandma-style pie as well as pizza by the slice. Pizzas range from $12 to $18. By the slice is $2.50 to $3.25.
Fresko offers delivery and takeout as well as the option of grabbing a table in its 20-seat dining room. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.
