Huntington locals have a new option for soft serve: Kerber’s Farm is now serving frozen custard.

The farm, which dates back to 1941, is known for its pastries, pies and overstuffed egg sandwiches on flaky southern style biscuits loaded with cheese, eggs and breakfast meats of choice. The cozy throwback vibe of Kerber’s — with its wandering chickens, outdoor seating, growing gardens and picnic tables — feels exactly right for custard.

"Frozen custard is kind of one of those old-fashioned summer treats that I’ve always associated with getting at farmstands, like I did as a child," said Nick Voulgaris, Kerber’s owner since 2013.

Custard is the thicker, richer cousin to ice cream — made more indulgent by the addition of eggs — and Voulgaris said it's "already super popular" with customers. "Custard is just kind of a different experience, something that you don’t find everywhere. That’s why we wanted to go ahead and offer it."

Served in wafer cones ($5.95) or cups ($6.95, $8.95), the "Farm Vanilla" and "Chocolate Moose" selections are smooth, silky swirls of goodness, topped with or without sprinkles ($.50). Voulgaris is also "experimenting with different beverages made with the custard in them" that will debut soon.

Over the last decade, Voulgaris has been recreating the farm experience of his youth at Kerber’s. He restored the vegetable gardens, nurtured beehives and raised 250 hens on a farm that also houses pigs, sheep, goats and Cayuga ducks. Kerber's also opened a farm school, added cooking classes and honey sampling to its offerings and hosts kids birthday parties. In early 2023, Kerber’s expanded to New York City with the opening of an outpost in Manhattan's West Village.

Kerber’s Huntington, 309 W. Pulaski Rd., 631-423-4400, kerbersfarm.com; Open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
