The Study by Toast has opened in East Setauket, offering a more java-and pastry-focused coffeehouse experience from the brand that specializes in all-day brunch restaurants around Long Island.
The space has a decidedly general store feel, albeit with decor that feels like a cozy home library — a velvet couch, red booths and wooden tables provide seating for up to 75. More playful touches, like a golden stag with eyeglasses perched on its nose, wink to the Instagram-ready style seen at other Toast locations.

"You want to create a space for people to come outside of their homes and work and enjoy and this seems like it might fulfill that need," said owner Terence Scarlatos. It took a year of planning and coordination to launch the concept, which involved opening a new Toast at Station Yards in Ronkonkoma.
Pastries, baked in-house, include an American cruller ($5), vegan morning bun ($5) and the Mexican sweet bread, la concha ($5). Cold brew coffees and teas share the coffee menu with cappuccino and espresso.
Heartier fare on the menu, from partner-chef Scott Andriani, includes the NYC bodega-inspired waygu chopped cheese ($19), a chicken salad melt ($14) and a "smashbrowns" take on hash browns. There's an effort to source ingredients locally.
"Our honey comes from 2 miles away," Andriani said. "It’s really trying to care about every single little bit of product that goes into everything."
Friday and Saturday night dinners and live music will start in November, Scarlatos said, while high tea hours and trivia nights are also being considered.
"One of the things that’s always inspiring for me, when people come together it’s in the coffeehouse and outside of the home and I just want to be that space for this area," he said.
