The average person 65 or older takes more than four prescription medications and two over-the-counter drugs, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Throw in the vitamins and occasional supplements, and the potential for harmful interaction increases.

Here's a chance to find out if any of the drugs you are taking can combine to cause dangerous side effects. Gather all your medications in their original containers and take them to Freeport Memorial Library on Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local pharmacists and students from the College of Pharmacy at St. John's University and Allied Health Professions in Queens will look over your medications and let you know if they are safe to take together.

The event is free. For an appointment, call 516-579-4711.
