Long Island school officials announced dozens of closings for Monday in the aftermath of a blizzard that left more than 30 inches of snow in some areas.

As of early Monday morning at least 29 LI school districts said they will be closed, according to a Newsday/News12 database available at newsday.com/closings. Several others announced delayed opening.

Included are: Bay Shore School District, Brentwood Schoold District, Central Islip School District, Commack School District, Comsewogue School District, Connetquot School District, Eastport School District, Elwood School District, Half Hollow Hills School District, Hauppauge School District, Harborfields School District, Huntington School District, Islip School District, Kings Park School District, Longwood School District, Middle County School District, Miller Place School District, Mount Sinai School District, Northport-East Northport School District, Patchogue-Medford School District, Port Jefferson School District, Rocky Point School District, Sachem School District, Shoreham-Wading River School District, Smithtown School District, South Country School District, South Huntington School District, Three Village School District, Wyandanch School District.

"People are still digging out, trying to find out what kind of shape their school buildings are in," Julie Lutz, a deputy superintendent of the Eastern Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services, said Saturday. Eastern Suffolk BOCES is headquartered in Patchogue.

Schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties experienced an unprecedented loss of class time after superstorm Sandy struck Oct. 29 and a nor'easter followed on Nov. 7.

As a result, school calendars are stretched tight. More weather-related closings could make it difficult for school districts to meet the state's minimum annual requirement of 180 days of instruction.

About two-thirds of the Island's districts are holding class during all or part of the February midwinter break, Feb. 18 through 22, to make up for classtime lost to Sandy and the earlier nor'easter.
