Adelphi University has earned a spot on a 2022 list of campuses most welcoming to LGBTQ+ students and faculty, the university has announced.
The “Best of the Best Colleges and Universities for LGBTQ+ Students in the United States” is a list of institutions chosen annually by the group Campus Pride, a national nonprofit that advocates for more inclusive campuses. Forty colleges were on the list this year.
"Being recognized by Campus Pride as the Best of the Best is a tremendous honor," said Anna Zinko, Adelphi assistant vice president for student affairs, in a statement Wednesday announcing the designation. "It is an affirmation of the efforts of the faculty, staff and students across Adelphi's campus who have dedicated their time, energy and passion to ensure that Adelphi is inclusive and supportive of our LGBTQIA+ community members."
Shane Windmeyer, Campus Pride executive director, said "Students, prospective students, and their families, along with faculty and staff members, deserve to know whether they will be safe on campus, so they can make the best choices for their own academic success.”
Adelphi's announcement said its new Multicultural Center, opening this fall, will be a hub of cultural activities and celebrations on campus, and will include a staff coordinator to oversee programing and support for the LGBTQIA+ community. LGBTQIA stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual/agender and is sometimes used in place of the shorter LGBTQ+.
Adelphi’s website cites clubs and affinity groups, gender-neutral bathrooms and gender-inclusive housing, mentoring and advocacy training as part of a diverse and inclusive campus. It earned a perfect five out of five stars rating on the Campus Pride Index, the nonprofit’s rating system based on an institution’s answers to 50 self-assessment questions.
Among the 40 campuses earning a five-star rating — up from 30 last year — were Pace University in New York City and Ithaca College upstate.
Nationally, Ohio State University and Kent State University, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and the University of Pennsylvania also were on the list.
