Riverhead High School principal reassigned amid probe, district says

Riverhead High School principal Charles Regan has been removed from his post, pending a school district investigation into what officials are calling "a personnel matter," Superintendent Aurelia Henriquez said in a statement on the system's website.
Regan has been "administratively reassigned," according to Henriquez's statement posted Tuesday night, which made public the principal's removal as of Tuesday morning.
Regan has been the high school's principal since 2013. He had worked as an assistant principal starting in 2006.
He was paid $187,693 in the 2017-18 school year, according to the most recent figures reported to the New York State Teachers Retirement System obtained by Newsday under the state's Freedom of Information Law.
The superintendent's statement does not identify any other subject of the investigation and does not give specifics regarding the principal's reassignment or duties. Regan will not be at the high school during the investigation, it says.
School officials on Wednesday declined to comment.
"While we understand that there will be questions surrounding this matter, the district is legally prohibited from sharing further details on it," Henriquez said in the statement.
In the interim, Assistant Principal Sean O'Hara will serve as acting principal, she said in the statement.
Regan began his career as a special-education teacher with Eastern Suffolk BOCES and earlier worked in the Eastport-South Manor district as a special-education teacher, inclusion teacher and dean of high school students.
Riverhead High School had about 1,850 students in grades nine through 12 in the 2017-18 school year, the most recent data on the state Education Department's website.
