More than two dozen Apple iPads were stolen from a Merrick elementary school during a Sunday night break-in, according to Nassau County police.

An unidentified person slipped in through an unlocked rear window at Chatterton School on Merrick Avenue at 10:55 p.m., a police investigation revealed. Once inside, the suspect took 26 iPads and fled. The person caused about $300 in damage to the window screens, according to police.

The value of the iPads was not immediately available Thursday. Superintendent Diana Ketcham told parents in a letter the district was cooperating with police as they work to identify the person responsible.

"Please know that the safety and security of our schools remains our highest priority," Ketcham said. "We are carefully reviewing our security procedures and are taking additional precautions to help ensure that an incident such as this does not happen again."

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS or call 911. All callers will remain anonymous.
