East Rockaway
VOTING
6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at the East Rockaway School District offices.
THE BUDGET
The district proposes a budget of $38,274,432, for 2017-18, a 0.42 decrease from the current $38,436,281. The tax levy would increase by 0.88 percent, from $28,871,284 to $29,126,399.
This increase is equal to the district’s tax-cap limit, so a simple majority will be required to approve the budget.
School taxes on the average single-family home would increase by 0.87 percent, from $7,799 to $7,867.
The proposed budget includes an additional academic intervention support math teacher at the elementary level, a part-time social worker becoming full-time, expanded extracurricular clubs and increased funding for the robotics, science research, and music and arts programs and Distributive Education Club of America. The teachers are currently in negotiations. Their contract expires on June 30.
A proposition asks voters to approve spending up to $295,557.50 from district capital reserve funds for window replacements at Rhame Avenue School and districtwide security enhancements and interior upgrades and renovations.
Another proposition asks voters to approve spending up to $485,874.93 from district capital reserve funds for districtwide purchases and/or replacement of some technology and telecommunications equipment and software.
