Low-income SUNY students will receive free access to graduate-level and professional licensure test preparation resources for the next three years, SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. announced Thursday.

King said in a release that 1,500 students in the SUNY Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program will be able to take practice tests and use other prep materials — which can cost up to $1,000 — through a collaboration with the Kaplan education company. Resources will be available for exams such as the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, OAT, NCLEX-RN and the CPA licensure exam.

“Students working to further their education and achieve their aspirations face many challenges, and the financial burden of test preparation materials should never stand in the way of graduate school,” King said.

The Educational Opportunity Program, which accepts students based on income and "academic readiness," was created in 1967. For the 2025-26 academic year, income eligibility ranged from $27,861 for a one-person household to $97,532 for an eight-person household.

The initiative provides access, academic support and financial assistance to students. Through its Scholars Program, SUNY offers resources to students looking to move on to graduate and professional education, as well as "high-demand" careers.

Pre-medical, pre-engineering and pre-law programs are currently available and SUNY officials said the program will expand in the coming year to include teaching and nursing — fields with "persistent shortages."

On Long Island, about 500 SUNY students were enrolled in the Educational Opportunity Program in 2024, according to university figures. That includes 265 students at Stony Brook University, 50 at Farmingdale State College and 75 at SUNY Old Westbury. Projected freshman enrollment in the program was 44 students at Nassau Community College and 50 at Suffolk County Community College.

In a statement, Kaplan North America chief executive Gregory Marino said, “Kaplan is proud to partner with the State University of New York to empower EOP students with the test prep they need to achieve their educational and career goals."
